This article from Language International details the steps and considerations that a subtitler undergoes - rather than to translate - to convey the intended subtext of a cinematic story. Interestingly, successful subtitles become yet another layer of artistry, as crucial as strong editing or continuity. What the subtitler faces - establishing a consistent reading speed, keeping the foreign viewer's eyesmoving continuously between image and text, working within the cuts, and making sure that the story is still opening up to the reader at the same time as the listener.
